Breakthrough by Joe Bonamassa: New Album Announced, Title Track Out Now

Breakthrough by Joe Bonamassa is officially on the way. The blues-rock guitarist and vocalist has announced that his next studio album, titled Breakthrough, will be released on July 18 through J&R Adventures. Known for a steady stream of high-quality releases, Bonamassa is adding another chapter to his prolific career with what he calls his most adventurous album yet.

Coinciding with the announcement, Bonamassa released the album’s title track, Breakthrough, which is now available on all major streaming platforms. The song blends emotional storytelling with Bonamassa’s signature guitar work, bringing listeners into a powerful theme of renewal and moving forward after being held back.

The new single was co-written with Grammy-winning producer and songwriter Tom Hambridge, a frequent collaborator who has worked with Buddy Guy, ZZ Top, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. The track opens with a blues-rooted chant and builds into dynamic guitar solos and a rhythm section that supports its uplifting message. Its catchy chorus and melodic riffs signal a fresh direction for the artist while staying true to his blues-rock foundation.

Breakthrough was recorded across several countries, including sessions in Greece, Egypt, Nashville, and Los Angeles. These diverse locations helped shape the sound of the album into something wide-reaching and layered. Kevin Shirley, a longtime producer who has worked with Iron Maiden and The Black Crowes, once again partnered with Bonamassa to produce the record.

The album reflects Bonamassa’s evolving songwriting, which has become more groove-oriented and emotionally grounded. His previous singles “Still Walking With Me” and “Shake This Ground” gave a preview of this shift. While “Still Walking With Me” focused on appreciation and soulful elements, “Shake This Ground” offered a more introspective tone. Both tracks received strong attention ahead of this official album rollout.

Breakthrough features ten tracks in total, including “Trigger Finger,” “I’ll Take The Blame,” and “You Don’t Own Me.” Each song brings something new to the table, expanding the artist’s range without losing the roots that have earned him 28 #1 Billboard Blues albums.

This album comes at a time when Bonamassa is already active on multiple fronts. He is currently touring across Europe and is set to appear with his supergroup Black Country Communion, alongside Glenn Hughes, Jason Bonham, and Derek Sherinian, in June. Following the group’s European tour, Bonamassa will return to solo performances across Europe in July, including three sold-out nights in Cork, Ireland.

Fans in the United States will also get the chance to catch Bonamassa live. A newly announced U.S. Summer Tour for 2025 kicks off on July 31 at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles and includes stops at Red Rocks Amphitheatre and other notable venues. The schedule extends into the fall with dates at festivals and special performances, such as Keeping The Blues Alive at Sea in Alaska.

Bonamassa’s career continues to build in multiple directions. In addition to touring and recording, he remains involved in mentoring new artists through his label, Journeyman Records, and supports music education through his Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation.

For fans old and new, Breakthrough by Joe Bonamassa represents not just a new album but a refreshed perspective from a veteran musician still pushing boundaries. With its title track leading the way, the album promises a collection of songs rooted in emotional resilience and personal growth.

Breakthrough by Joe Bonamassa Lyrics:

Oh, I’m headed for a breakthrough
I see it all
Gonna take me a hammer
Knock down the walls
Every stone I chip away
I think of you
I’m headed for a breakthrough

Oh, come on and get here, woman
I don’t know where you’ve been
The past few days
My mindful eyes are weak and weary
I shed no tears when I see things clearly

Oh, what good is it anyway?
It’s after dark, there’s steam from the drains
Solitude is a lonely journey
Got work to do, but I ain’t worried

Oh, I’m headed for a breakthrough
I see it all
Gonna take me a hammer
Knock down the walls
With every stone I chip away
I think of you
I’m headed for a breakthrough
I’m headed for a breakthrough
I’m headed for a breakthrough
It’s gonna get me over you

When your trust is gone
Like being lost, left for dead
The blues can pull you down and leave you empty
Sleeping alone in an empty bed

Oh, I’m headed for a breakthrough
I see it all
Gonna take me a hammer
Knock down the walls
With every stone I chip away
I think of you
I’m headed for a breakthrough
I’m headed for a breakthrough
I’m headed for a breakthrough
It’s gonna get me over you

You hurt me so bad, it’s criminal
Left me on the streets to die
Your version of love is so wonderful
You didn’t have to say goodbye

Oh, I’m headed for a breakthrough
I see it all
Gonna take me a hammer
Knock down the walls
With every stone I chip away
I think of you
I’m headed for a breakthrough
I’m headed for a breakthrough
I see it all
Gonna take me a hammer
Knock down the walls
With every stone I chip away
I think of you
I’m headed for a breakthrough
Headed for a breakthrough
I’m headed for a breakthrough
Gonna get me over you
I’m headed for a breakthrough
Headed for a breakthrough
I’m headed for a breakthrough
I see it all

Headed for a breakthrough
I’m headed for a breakthrough
Yeah
Headed for a breakthrough
I’m headed for a breakthrough
I see it all
