Jools Holland with his R & B Orchestra, featuring Jeff Beck – Drown in My Own Tears

Because he didn’t have the commercial success of his friends Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page, Beck’s innovations and influence are sometimes overlooked.

From his time with the Yardbirds to his final recordings, he matched the flash and fury of Jimmy Page, stretched the limits of his instrument as far, if not further than Jimi Hendrix; he was at the forefront of psychedelia with The Yardbirds, helped to birth “heavy metal” with the Jeff Beck Group and brought Jazz/Fusion to rock with the LPs “Blow by Blow” and “Wired”.

Throughout his career, there were long periods where he disappeared from the public eye only to return on his own timetable making music on his own terms with a dizzying array of musicians who were all on the same uncompromising wavelength.

This is a stunning version of a number made famous by Ray Charles, with Beck wringing a variety of sounds from his guitar, “singing” the song through his instrument.

Jools Holland with his R & B Orchestra, featuring Jeff Beck – Drown in My Own Tears

Lyrics:
It brings a tear
Into my eyes
When I begin
To realize
I’ve cried so much
Since you’ve been gone
I guess I’ll drown in my own tears

I sit and cry
Just like a child
My pouring tears
Are runnin’ wild
If you don’t think
You’ll be home soon
I guess I’ll drown, oh yes, in my own tears

I know it’s true
Into each life
Oh, some rain, rain must pour
I’m so blue
Here without you
It keeps raining
More and more

Why don’t you
Come on home
Oh yes, so I won’t
Be all alone
If you don’t think
You’ll be home soon

I guess I’ll (drown in my own tears)
Ooh, don’t let me (drown in my own tears)
When I’m in trouble, baby (drown in my own tears)
Oh, yeah, baby don’t let me (drown in my own tears)
I guess I’ll drown in my own tears
Oh, hmmm
