Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa- I’d Rather Go Blind

Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa – I’d Rather Go Blind – Live in Amsterdam

Real Singer, Real musicians, Real music for the soul, no lip-syncing and dancers and clowning around! This woman is phenomenal. Her voice is a combination of Etta James and Janis Joplin.

“I’d Rather Go Blind” is a blues song written by Ellington Jordan and co-credited to Billy Foster and Etta James. It was first recorded by Etta James in 1967, released in 1968, and has subsequently become regarded as a blues and soul classic. It was used in the end credits of Firewatch.

The more I listen to it, the more I understand the power of this song! Beth’s expressive voice supported by the Hammond organ, very effective brass, and drums, and in the middle of this song, the apotheosis with this Dantean guitar solo with such precise notes, absolute accuracy and musical fluidity, the length and intensity of vibrato so well mastered, all done with great modesty. An intention as well delivered, frankly, at this level, this song cuts across art, it’s closer to the divine. What a beautiful musical moment!

So powerful, emotional, and evocative. There’s nothing like her in any musical era. This song is an absolute masterpiece.

Lyrics:
Something told me it was over
When I saw you and her talkin’
Something deep down in my soul said, ‘Cry, girl’
When I saw you and that girl walkin’ around

Whoo, I would rather, I would rather go blind, boy
Then to see you walk away from me, child, no

Whoo, so you see, I love you so much
That I don’t wanna watch you leave me, baby
Most of all, I just don’t, I just don’t wanna be free, no

Whoo, whoo, I was just, I was just, I was just
Sittin here thinkin’, of your kiss and your warm embrace, yeah
When the reflection in the glass that I held to my lips now, baby
Revealed the tears that was on my face, yeah
Whoo and baby, baby, I’d rather, I’d rather be blind, boy
Then to see you walk away, see you walk away from me, yeah

Whoo, baby, baby, baby, I’d rather be blind…

  1. You forgot to mention Beyonce’s cover in Cadillac Records. Amazing vocal by a supreme artist. Beth Hart’s cover is amazing, and Joe B just wails away too. Anybody who loves blues and hasn’t seen Cadillac Records- a must watch!
