Why Rory Gallagher’s “Moonchild” Is My Favorite Song

Moonchild by Rory Gallagher

The best performance I’ve ever heard was at Montreux Jazz Festival on July 5, 1985. Rory Gallagher was amazing, and Moonchild is a great song, but let’s not forget Gerry McAvoy.
His bass playing is very deceptive, but it isn’t that simple. While most people are familiar with the basic elements of his style, they don’t understand what is unique about his sound. His approach to music is based on the theory of modes.
He played with Rory for twenty years, and on this recording, every note he plays is exactly what should be played. Not too much, not too little. Supertight backing for Rory with Brendan O’Neill on drums.

Why do I like the song “Moonchild”? It has become my favorite song because it reminds me of the time when I was a young man full of hope and dreams.

About Moonchild
Rory Gallagher’s Moonchild is the third song on the album From “Calling Card”. The first song was “Do You Read Me.”

Lyrics:
You are a moonchild and pretty soon child
I’ve got that feeling
That I’m gonna make you smile forever
If I can.
Just give me a sign and I’ll show you my plan
You are a blue child, forever true child
You know I’ll try to paint the skies blue forever
If I can.
Just give me a sign and I’ll show you my plan.

Tell me why you look so sad,
Time slips by like grains of sand
Just put your future in my hands

You are a moonchild and pretty soon child
I’ve got the feelin I’m gonna make you smile forever.
If I can.

Just give me a sign and I’ll show you my plan,
Just give me a smile and I’ll show you my plan,
Just give me a sign and I’ll show you my plan

A short explanation of why Rory Gallagher’s “Moonchild” is my favorite song:

> It has a beautiful, flowing melody. The vocal is just amazing! The lyrics have a lot of imagery to it!

Rory Gallagher’s Moonchild is very good, with some of the best riffs on the entire song. Rory plays it in a slightly lower key and it works well, he doesn’t sound as though he’s trying too hard. Also, I’ve never heard Rory play in such a manner on this song before. He’s not playing guitar like a regular blues guitarist, which would normally be boring, but on Rory Gallagher’s Moonchild, it fits perfectly!
